Bossa nova vocalist Astrud Gilberto has died.

News of the singer’s passing was confirmed by close friend Paul Ricci on social media, explaining that he had been instructed to do so by Gilberto’s son Marcelo.

Writing on Twitter, Paul Ricci said: “She was an important part of ALL that is Brazilian music in the world and she changed many lives with her energy”.

Astrud Gilberto was born in the Bahia region of Brazil, before moving to Rio de Janeiro. Astrud married songwriter and composer João Gilberto in 1959; the two travelled to the United States together in 1963, where he worked and recorded alongside Stan Getz and Antonio Carlo Jobim.

The trip proved to be a landmark in the history of Brazilian music, a breakout moment for the style of Bossa nova. Requiring a female vocal for ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, João Gilberto decided to ask Astrud – who until then, had no recording experience as a vocalist.

Her shy, naturalistic take became legendary, a global hit that transformed a regional style into an international buzzword. While the original was a duet with her husband, it took the solo version for ‘The Girl To Ipanema’ to become a modern classic – thanks largely to Astrud’s inimitable vocal.
