NSW sport teacher Jonas Stoebe dies after crash at Perisher Ski Resort
A beloved PE teacher has tragically died after a crash at Australia’s largest ski resort while leading students on a school snow tour.
Jonas Stoebe, 55, sustained a “catastrophic brain injury” on the mountain at Perisher in NSW’s Snowy Mountains on Wednesday, September 6 and died a week later on September 13, according to a GoFundMe page set up by friends and colleagues.
Almost $250,000 has been raised for the Mr Stoebe’s partner Belinda and their two young sons, Lio, 12, and Luca, 9.
As the head of sport and physical education at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School, he had been leading a group of Year 9 and Year 11 students at the snow.
Perisher confirmed to news.com.au ski patrol responded to the serious ski incident on the advanced Dog Leg trail.
Mr Stoebe was then transport to Liverpool Hospital.
“Perisher Ski Resort, our Ski Patrol and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” Perisher vice president and general manager Nathan Butterworth said.
In a statement on Facebook, the school said their community was heartbroken to lose such a cherished member.
“Jonas was more than just an educator; he was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to all who knew him,” the school said.
“With unwavering dedication, Jonas had been part of our school community for 10 years, leaving an indelible mark on countless students’ lives.
“Our school community is heartbroken by this loss. We extend our deepest condolences to Jonas’ family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
“The impact Jonas had on our school and the lives of our students is immeasurable, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts.”
The school shared the fundraiser asking those who can to donate.
The GoFundMe page reads: “As we come to terms with the accident and gather to mourn this profound loss, we recognise that in addition to the emotional toll, there are practical challenges that lie ahead for Jonas’ young family.
“This is where our community can make a difference.”
It said funds raised would help with funeral costs, household expenses, mortgage repayments, and Belinda, who will now raise two boys on her own.
People who knew Mr Stoebe shared public messages about how he would be remembered.
